Lion’s Den CX Provincial Championship – Results

Well, another CX provincial championship has come and gone, and with it’s passing, Alberta has crowned a new Master Women’s Champion – Lesley Baldwin, from Fiera Race Team!!

Lesley Baldwin - the new Alberta Master Women's CX Provincial Champ

Lesley has been having a great CX season, and yesterday she won the Master’s race in dominating style.  Congratulations Leslie!!  Stay tuned to this blog for a race report from the Provincial Champ herself.

The Fiera Race Team had a record attendance at the race this weekend, fielding a total of 9 racers.  Shari Clare joined Lesley in the Master Women’s race, finishing in 4th place, 40 seconds off the podium.  Robbi Bonin raced in his very first Sport Men’s race and finished a respectable 19th.  He probably would have finished top 15 if he hadn’t stopped after 4 laps, started to cool down in the parking lot, and then realized that there was one more lap to go.  Keegan Brooks was also racing in the Sport Men’s race, and despite hitting the deck on the slippery grass many, many times, he finished 7th, less than a minute out of a podium finish.

Both Joseph Litke and Derek Mackenzie had their debut race in the Master B race this weekend.  Joe managed to keep his bike in one piece (last weekend in Red Deer he finished the race without a seat on his bike, after snapping the seat post in the second-last lap) and finished Top-10.  Derek was not far behind and rounded out the Top-15 .  Nice race, old guys!

In the Master A Men’s race, which featured a super fast field with several Elite racers, Jan Plavec and Darren McGregor were representing.  Jan was having a fantastic race and was looking to finish in the Top-5 when he flatted out near the end of the race.  As a consolation prize, Jan won the coveted draw prize – an espresso machine!  Darren had a strong race and managed to keep the rubber-side down for a 12th place finish in a very fast field of men.

Jan with his consolation prize...

Thanks to all the folks who came out to race and to cheer, and a big thank you to United Cycle for putting on another great race on another glorious fall day in Alberta.  Keep your eyes on the blog for more news from this race, including some pretty awesome barrier crashing footage…
